This is a news story I am working on for my journalism class. I will add as the story is more developed. This will be published...... IDEAS ARE WELCOME! 😄 NOTE: I AM NOT AGAINST HP. I AM WRITING ABOUT THE CONTREVOURSIES
Many people, especially children, have grown to love the magical world of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
J.K. Rowling is the author of the Harry Potter books that most people find to be fascinating and fun entertainment, which makes them even more enjoyable for children to read.
Despite children's love for the books many Christian parents object to Rowling’s books in belief that they are teaching children how to become witches and wizards.
"Black shapes were emerging out of thin air all around them, blocking their way left and right; eyes glinted through slits in hoods, a dozen lit wand tips were pointing directly at their hearts." [Chap. 35 pg. 781] That is an excerpt from Rowling’s book, “Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix.”
Staff Sergeant Barbara Schleppenbach, Philippines, believes the books are unfit for her child to read. As a child she was taught that when you read something you are getting involved with it. “Those books create bad images in your mind, and I don’t want my daughter to read them until she knows the difference between fiction and non-fiction,” she said.
In Rowling’s books the teenage wizard star, Harry Potter, has fended off dementors and death eaters as well as defeated a three-headed dog, a giant snake, an enormous spider, and a dragon but has not yet been able to defeat the master mind of evil himself, Lord Voldemort.
Since Harry’s main defense against those creatures is magic most Christian organizations believe that the books influence others to worship Satan. In Envoy magazine’s interview with the Italian ANSA news agency, Rev. Amorth said, “Behind Harry Potter hides the signature of the king of darkness, the devil.”
Because of the Harry Potter craze that has hit the world many churches have participated in book burnings, which is a violation of the First Amendment’s right to Freedom of Speech. Pastor Jack Brock told Reuters in an interview that “These books encourage our youth to learn more about witches, warlocks, and sorcerers, and those things are an abomination to God and to me.”
Though some do not appreciate the Potter books they also do not feel it is right to burn the books. Airman 1st Class Nichole Henley, need state she is from, said “They should be done away with, even the movies, but I don’t believe I’d go as far as to burn them.”
