I wouldn't call him type casted at all. He's brilliant He played it completely strait in "Donnie Brasco", and "Nick of Time"... so he does have that ability.
He did an amazing performance in an otherwise mediocre film, "The Libertine". Without his quirkiness, "Pirates" would not have become a trilogy. I wouldn't even call it "quirkiness"... I call it brilliance. He adds color to every character he plays without making it too cartoonish (besides his "Captain Jack", which is, in fact, a Disney character.. so why not?). To be able to portray a character as colorful as he does while making the character believable is an art.
I'm one of the few who do not gawk at his attractive looks, but appreciate the fact that he's an actor that brings something to the table when it comes to film. He's not just "adequate" for a film, he practically makes the film.
I suppose it's all a matter of opinion. I don't like to go to films and see an imitation of life, I like to see an interpretation of life. Which is why I love directors like Burton and Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez.
