X-MEN and the story behind their costumes

When Mystique tried to save Toad, she too was genetically changed by Prosh’s machines. As a result her default state sported scales with slicked back hair. [X-Men Forever #6] Actually, this was done to make her look like in the successful movie adaption of the X-Men. It is unknown whether the scaly state is still her default form and Mystique only shapeshifts into her old template because she likes it more.

Once more trying to kill Senator Robert Kelly, she dressed in a more modern outfit: black leather pants and jacket along with her standard skull jewelry. [Uncanny X-Men #388]

.....and

After breaking out of prison, Mystique settled for this white two-parter. [Uncanny X-Men #405]

JEAN GREY

This is the standard training uniform Xavier gave the original X-Men when they joined the team. Jean received it in X-Men (1st series) #1.

A few months later, Jean redesigned the training uniforms. While those of her male teammates more or less stayed the same, her own costume changed into a more female version. The mask no longer covered her entire head and the costume was now low-necked. Additionally, it had a new red belt.

After the team had proved themselves in battle time and again, Xavier rewarded them with the right for individual costumes. This set was again designed by Jean, whom Xavier had secretly told of this plan before. [X-Men (1st series) #39] Jean’s rather revealing mini-dress mostly had long sleeves, though, in a few occasions, was drawn with short.

At a time when all her costumes were either in the laundry or torn, Jean returned to wearing a training outfit, again slightly modified. She then decided to keep it, partially for nostalgia reasons. [X-Men Hidden Years #8] In time, she would alternate between the two looks.

When the original five X-Men reunited they came up with the idea of X-Factor. To the media, they acted as a mutant hunting group, while secretly they were trying to help mutants to handle their powers. As cover they wore a new set of costumes, calling themselves X-Terminators, whenever they used their powers in public. [X-Factor #1] Not before long, Jean again replaced the head-covering mask of the X-Terminators costume with one that only hid her face.

&................

After they saved New York from Apocalypse and his Horsemen, X-Factor finally ended their charade and exposed their cover to the media. They became celebrities and a thankful designer, whom the team had rescued earlier that day, created a new look for them. The new costumes were close to the X-Terminator uniforms but the color schemes were different. [X-Factor #26]

While on a temporary leave of absence, Jean ran into Banshee and Forge who were looking for the then-missing X-Men. During the time she helped them out, she wore a new standard X-uniform, one that had been modified by Moira MacTaggert and contained lots of several functions like temperature regulation and body armor. [Uncanny X-Men #262] Despite these added functions, Jean didn’t feel comfortable in this outfit and returned to her X-Factor look once she returned to her team.

Shortly after the X-Tinction Agenda, X-Factor settled for a new team look. Cyclops, Jean and Iceman all wore identical uniforms. Only Archangel and the furred Beast stuck to their looks. This is the first suit that did not cover Scott’s hair. [X-Factor #63]

Only a few weeks later, X-Factor rejoined the X-Men and again new costumes were in order. [X-Men (2nd series) #1] Jean’s seemed rather unspectacular, though she wore it for quite some time.

During a time away from the team, when the Summers couple was living in Alaska, Jean troubled Scott with the decision to change her costume and wear a simulacrum of the one Phoenix II had worn while posing as her. However, Jean later explained that she had come to terms with her past and no longer wanted to hold back with her powers. Instead, she wanted to fully explore her abilities and focused her psi-powers in a visible bird-shaped energy effect. [Uncanny X-Men #354]

Sometime after Cyclops had apparently died, as he had become the new host body for Apocalypse, Jean rejoined the X-men in a new costume. This one, again, sported a Phoenix logo, though colored red instead of green. [Uncanny X-Men #381]

Recently, Xavier changed the entire look of his students. Instead of wearing bright costumes, they are now using some leather outfits that almost look like street clothes. The members have a vast supply of different shirts, coats and jackets from which to pick. [Uncanny X-Men #394]

that's it 😄

i'll post bishop's costume changes. yay bishop.

This is the standard X.S.E. uniform (Xavier Security Enforcers) that Bishop wore as high ranking officer and commander of his own squad. He continued to wear it after he accidentally came to the present and joined the X-Men. [first seen in Uncanny X-Men #282]
