There was a time several years ago when DC Comics dominated in comic book movies, but they only had two notable franchises: Superman and Batman. Both franchises went on to produce four movies each, but both franchises were killed after their fourth films bombed (i.e., Superman IV and Batman and Robin). And now, both franchises are being restarted again.
I will admit that Batman was a great comic book franchise for its time, but after "Batman" debuted in 1989 everyone thought that there would be a resurgence and renaissance of comic book movies. That didn't really happen until 13 years later when "Spider-Man" destroyed every conceivable box office record possible (only to have "Spider-Man 2" top them two years later).
BTW, Marvel Comics wasn't always successful. They had one comic book movie that completely bombed: Captain America from 1992.
Today, Marvel Comics is just raking in all the box office dough, and part of the reason of their success is that they have more interesting and appealing comic book characters: Spider-Man, The Hulk, The X-Men, Punisher, Daredevil, Man-Thing, Fantastic Four.
Batman doesn't have a specific superpower such as shooting lasers off his fingertips or whatever, but he does have an origin story. And origin stories are fundamental in translating a comic book to the big screen. In the case of Batman Begins, we're going to witness the evolution of Bruce Wayne to Batman (and see if, from "Batman" in 1989, The Joker really did kill Batman's parents).
