Thomas Jane Talks Punisher 2! Source: Edward Douglas Thursday, July 29, 2004

While in town promoting his new movie "Stander," about the legendary South African bank robber, actor Thomas Jane talked to Superhero Hype! about the possibilities of a sequel to his 2004 comic book inspired vigilante action flick, The Punisher. An avid comic fan, Jane is still very enthusiastic about the character and the possibilities, despite the lackluster box office and response to the first movie. According to sources, Marvel's Avi Arad is still intent on getting a sequel off the ground.

"Yeah, we have had discussions. We want Jigsaw to be the bad guy," he told us, "We'll probably shoot it for much the same budget and probably go to Australia or South Africa where we can stretch the dollar. I'd do another one. It's a niche market film that will always be that, and that's what it should be."

He wasn't bothered at all by the perception that it was a disappointment at the box office. "In today's market, if it's not a blockbuster, then it's somehow considered a failure. I just don't understand that point of view. It saddens me that if a film doesn't sell a million Happy Meals that it's considered to be a failure, and that is just incorrect. We need to change our view of that. In today's market, there's certainly a place for the blockbuster type of film, but if you can make a film for $30 million and its grossed like 50-something so far worldwide and then do a bunch more business on DVD, then that film has done its job. I like movies that don't have to cater and appeal to everybody. Those movies are great, movies that cross the board and you can take your six-year old kid and your grandma, and everybody loves it. Fantastic! And there should be more movies like that and there will be, but there should also be movies that cater to people who like to see something different. People that have a need to see something that is off-the-beaten path a little bit. That's what 'The Punisher' is there for and that's what it's there to serve. It's for the fans and I'm very proud of it. I hope they don't ever process it down and turn it into something that it shouldn't be."

We wondered if maybe he'd approach the character any different having the first movie to work from. "Absolutely. I like the character a lot and I had a lot of fun with him. For me, the second one would be an exploration of the morality of what he does. He's so close to being a bad guy and does what he does cause more harm than good? Those kind of things are interesting for me. Where do you draw the line between what you're doing being justifiable and not?"

He told us a bit about how extreme the second movie may be. "The first one ended with him busting into that club and taking out all those people, and the second will open where the first one left off. It will just be incredibly violent and then it will just get more and more violent as the film goes on. That's the kind of film that it should be! It's a real take no prisoners punk rock kind of an action film, and g**ammit, it should piss a lot of people off!"

YES! MORE VIOLENCE! I can't get enough of that shit.

man, i want to see the first one! when does it come out on DVD?

THE PUNISHER DVD: SEPTEMBER, 7, 2004

thanks. Is it worth buying?

The movie is GREAT but I don't know what the extra features on the DVD will be like yet.

Wait for the directors cut or something, untill then rent it. I know the cut out some scenes there from the movi, so it might be worth waiting for the directors cut. I say its a collectible DVD, cuz still it's just the first Punisher, it's not dazzling but I had fun watching it. I think they might bring us more in the second one. BAre in mind that Thomas Jane turned out to be a great Punisher, well at least from my point of view.

Oh hell yea, Thomas Jane looked the perfect Frank Castle.

MORE VIOLENCE!

so franks gonna get more and more violent like in the comics

Sounds to me like its gonna be even better than the first one 😈

I don't know 😕 Maybe the violence or something I guess would make some sensitive or old people mad.

Hey they got mad at Batman 89 for the violence.

I hope for a PUNISHER part 2, I think Jigsaw would be a great choice as the villian in this movie. Anythoughs on this?? Jigsaw needs to have his face ruin, before he gets to be the villian evey one knows.

I also think Jigsaw would be great in Punisher 2 just as long as he is played by the right person. Another thing I want to see is the Punisher just punish a handful of criminals around the city during the movie besides fighting Jigsaw.

Jane Talks More Punisher Sequel Source: About.com Thursday, August 5, 2004

About.com chatted with The Punisher star Tom Jane who shared some ideas he had for the sequel...

There's a pretty good storyline in Circle of Blood," Jane said. "I like taking storylines from the comics and running them together. It would be great if Circle of Blood was one of them. And again, there's some pretty good stuff from the War Journal stuff. I'm hoping that number two is called The Punisher War Zone. Like we could do The Punisher: Circle of Blood or The Punisher War Zone. I think that'd be fun."

Punisher 2 Speculation
From Fred Topel,

Tom Jane shares his ideas
While talking to Tom Jane about his latest film, Stander, we got on the subject of The Punisher 2. Though box office on the original was modest, Avi Arad has been assuring fans that the sequel is in development. Jane has his own ideas for subsequent stories.

“There’s a pretty good storyline in Circle of Blood,” Jane said. “I like taking storylines from the comics and running them together. It would be great if Circle of Blood was one of them. And again, there’s some pretty good stuff from the War Journal stuff. I’m hoping that number two is called The Punisher War Zone. Like we could do The Punisher: Circle of Blood or The Punisher War Zone. I think that’d be fun.”

That said, Jane has no idea what the studio will actually agree to, if anything at all. “I know that everybody wants to make it. I know that we don’t have a script and we don’t have a budget and we don’t have any other actors except for me. Everything’s a go until somebody says it’s not. That’s how these things work. That’s how the first one worked. It was a go and then they didn’t like the script so it was being rewritten. Nothing’s going until it’s going. So, it’s going, until it’s not.”

Jane was happy with the performance of the original Punisher and the audience it found. “I like what it did and I like the place that it ended up having. My expectations for the film were not exceeded and I wasn’t let down either. I didn’t ever think that this was going to be a blockbuster film because of the nature of the material and the brutality of it, and the conditions of what we’re living in today. If this film had come out in the ‘70s, it would be a whole nother story. But today, we’re just not as a massive culture, we’re not into that. And I knew that. And that’s why I did it. These movies, there needs to be a market and what we’re seeing in films today is the overbloatation of selling happy meals and rides and sh*t to ride behind a film. Which is fine and there’s a place for that and more power to them, but what’s happening is the balloon is getting so big at the top that there’s nothing in the middle. It’s either that or you’re watching internet porn. There’s very little in the middle. What’s in the middle is being neglected. The Punisher was made for a specific audience and it catered to that audience and that audience got what they paid for.”
