It isnt that good, Timm Bruce botched to much of the DC lore and manipulated the series to his own fanboy creation. John and Hawk girl r pathetic entries that had no right to go over Jordan and aquaman. Not to mention the display of power was pitiful...Timm needs to watch some DBZ to know how to show trully aweomse speed, destrucion, power and fights. I also will mention how sad it is to see Superman in what could possible be his lowest showing to date.

the fights between superman and marvel, and superman and darkseid, and superman and atom, were awesome imo...

sure they were low showings, but they had high showings too...

High showings...compared to the source material they where all freaking jobbers. Watch a fight in DBZ then watch a fight in JLU/JL...hell the DC characters r more powerful then DBZ characters yet it looked like Goku could easily solo the entire animated universe of DC lol. I just dont think Bruce Timm(or USA animated companies in general) know how to show real power. I always wanted Supes to do a "Goku like" power up scene where the entire planet would start to break apart..instead supes gets owned every other episode by low tier oppoenets.

synop for Superman: Doomsday a direct-to-video animated film being released on the 18 of this month

When LexCorp accidentally unearths the intergalactic serial killer Doomsday, Superman battles the creature head-on in the fight of his life...literally. The world collectively mourns their fallen hero; humanity realizes it will never feel truly safe again. Superman's enemies rejoice - all but Lex Luthor, who grieves the loss in his own demented manner, setting off a chilling chain of events that even he couldn't have foreseen. But a world without Superman proves to be short-lived when the Man of Steel mysteriously returns, or does he?

back to JLU. all those fights might have been mid level but all that changed when superman took on captain marvel. also vs darksied after he gave him the speech about how all his life he was afraid he would kill somebody cuz the wolrd is like cardborad to him, then he let loose on dude. but besides that the best foghting episode was when Gen. Eiling took on all those street levels and just complelety owned

Yesterday, on impulse, I went and rented Seasons 1 & 2 for a week. I don't know why - I don't have cable at home, and have only looked at parts of episodes when visiting my mother, on late night TV. Maybe it was just looking at Superman vs. Captain Marvel on YouTube this week. Anyway, I watched the first seven episodes straight and had a great time. The advantage of playing with a huge roster means many different characters per episode. Seeing them adapt Alan Moore's famous "For the man who has everything..." Superman story was great, as was Batman & Zatanna vs. Circe, and when the league gets transformed into children to fight Modred. And former JLA writer J.M. Dematteis writes some episodes, too. 👆

OK – after starting with Justice League Unlimited on Nov. 7, I followed up immediately with Season 2, then backtracked & rented Seasons 1 & 2 of Justice League, finishing all the episodes on Nov. 23. That’s a total of 91 episodes watched in 17 days! 😱
Whew- it was fun. I read all the pages of the thread here, and to see people going just episode to episode for a few years…well. Watching on DVD is different of course, but I watched every episode in order, and didn’t skip or fast forward. I didn’t even look at the menu lists; just followed where the show was taking me, not knowing who or what was coming up next.

The major difference is I watched JLU first, with only vague ideas about the stories that came before. I’d seen parts of when Superman was kidnapped by Brainiac & Darkseid, and the introduction of the Justice Lords. I guess it was because JLU had the huge cast, and I wanted to see the clash between Superman & Captain Marvel. But doing it this way gave me a circular feeling, like watching the original Star Wars Trilogy & then the Prequel Trilogy.
That’s why the finale of JL Season 2 – ‘Starcrossed’ – had such an emotionally charged feeling and the fight felt so personal, knowing the serious consequences for Shayera, John Stewart & the League (just like Revenge Of The Sith was so charged with emotion in the climax, because we knew what it would mean.)

Some random, wide brush thoughts:

-Season 1 is good, but feels stiff & has more simple plots compared to Seasons 2-4. I’m buying 2-4, but I’ll only get Season 1 if it’s discounted somewhere. It was worth it for the three-part ender “The Savage Time”, though. And Superman was at his least powerful here, but they would start giving him bigger feats the following year.

-It honours the history of the heroes, and some famous stories get adapted, but it’s more fun than the comic because it’s out of continuity. Just like how The Ultimates have been more fun to read lately than The Avengers, because you can start over and knit things together. It especially helps with the characters of Shayera, John, Wally and J’onn. I never would have thought of John & Shayera hooking up in the comic, but they can do it here. And Shayera brings some of Wolverine’s belligerency with her violent fighting style and love of hard drinking – her cool Hawk mask is even like Logan’s. Smart move by the producers.
👆

-Aquaman was as dull as usual, and thankfully didn’t make many appearances. And they seemed to give him a personality more like Namor or Black Adam, aka a superdick. Still didn’t find him interesting.

-I thought at first they were doing the Barry Allen Flash. I was pleased that it was Wally West. It continues to show what a difference his personality makes compared to Barry; DC needs someone with a Spider Man-like disposition to lighten things up. And he gets some of the best lines. The episode in Season 4 where he & Luthor switch minds was the funniest show of all. 😂

-Every voice actor was spot on, and Bruce Timm’s slight caricature work on the characters makes them feel as real as life. This is something 2D animation can still do better than 3D – depict drama, and convey emotion of character in faces & bodies with much more subtlety.👆

-The multi-part episodes that climaxed each season were among the best; “Starcrossed” from Season 2 was the best, with Shayera’s torn loyalties and the League going underground. Followed by “The Savage Time” from Season 1, set in WWII. Season 3’s final battle against Brainiac/Luthor was great for healing all the old wounds and seeing Wally tap into the Speedforce.

-After all the battles & conflicts though, the heart of the show to me was, amazingly, the relationship between John Stewart & Shayera Hol. Characters like Batman & Superman represented the big picture struggle of the League against world opinion & their enemies. But I found myself caring so much about John & Shayera (and the slow & steady building of their feelings orchestrated by the writers) because they are the ones whose worlds get torn down, and do the rare thing that happens on TV: they change & evolve, while the other characters pretty much stay the same from beginning to end. Ironic, because they were the two people put into the show over Hal Jordan & Aquaman, for the sake of giving the audience more diversity. It would extend to their physical appearances, which changed after Season 2; just like people who separate in real life, that change their look. ✅
I read a lot of hate for John early in the thread here, but you can’t have so many whitebread characters that are too alike, and Guy (A-Hole) Gardner could never be a serious option for long. Only Lobo would be more annoying. (Green Arrow filled the spot as resident pain-in-the-ass, effectively as always.) Plus, IR relationships are rarely seen on TV or the movies, and to see one handled with such maturity on a cartoon show – a medium still sometimes dismissed for children – it was great. Knowing that they might conceive the hero Warhawk sometime in the future, it felt reassuring that things would end up alright between them. The influence of African-American writers & editors like Dwayne McDuffie probably contributed to this; that’s maybe why so many guest voices on the show were black (Phil Morris, Keith David, Michael Jai White, Dennis Haysbert), and you can see many mixed couples and families in the background of episodes. We can see the true melting pot & mosaic of North America. 👆

-My favourite character of all was Shayera. She represented the idea of sacrifice for the greater good better than anyone else, and went on a true emotional journey. Besides her and John, there was great couple interaction between Black Canary & Green Arrow (no surprise), Huntress & The Question (that was a surprise! 😱 ) and Wonder Woman & Batman (Diana was ready to go, if Bruce could just give in to it – the teasing was perfect 😄 )
