With comic book movies all the rage, one of the most wished-for properties among fans has been Mike Mignola’s demonic detective Hellboy from the Dark Horse Comics series. When the film version debuted last March, it was scored a modest—if not breakout—success and almost immediately rumors began to emerge about a Hellboy 2. Now, in an exclusive interview with Now Playing Magazine, writer-director Guillermo del Toro reveals that a sequel to the film is actively being developed.
“The storyline for this one is going to be created both by Mike Mignola and I, and we’ve been on the phone [talking] about it and just jamming,” says del Toro. “We have one idea that we have been nurturing since the early stages of the first film and we’re fleshing it out. Definitely, it’s been a very active communication.”
The director reveals that Mignola spent several weeks in Los Angeles with him this past summer to “put the basic story down on paper.” del Toro will pen the screenplay himself, but the filmmaker has a smaller project set to start filming before production on Hellboy 2 begins.
With that said, del Toro is also anxious to get back to the universe of Hellboy and the characters he transformed into flesh and blood people for the first film.
“Most everybody is coming back,” he says. “Abe Sapien is coming back. Liz, Myers…even Professor Broom is doing a little cameo. We have a moment in the movie where you see Professor Bruttenholm as a younger man reading a story to Hellboy.”
In addition to the leads, there are several supporting characters from Mignola’s world that the director can’t wait to explore on film in the sequel.
“You will get new characters from the B.P.R.D. comics,” says del Toro, referring to Hellboy’s organization, the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense. “You’re going to get Johan, the guy with no body, which is a really great character. And we’re going to have a little surprise cameo from one of the villains from the first film.”
With a green light from Sony and Revolution Studios, del Toro and his team still have some time to get started on the actual production.
“We’re going to be thinking about late 2005 at the earliest to start pre-production,” he concludes. “You never know with these things, but that would be a good guess.”
Hellboy 2 currently has a target release date of 2006.
