So I just got back from the 10am showing in Phoenix (first of the day), here are the gripes to watch out for: *Spoiler Warning*
Spoiler:
1 The best Symbiote animation is during the opening credits, but the second half of those same credits it goes to the gutter.
2 There is no tongue on Venom, I repeat Venom does not have a tongue!
3 The voice for Venom hardly changes between human and full symbiotic pair. Look to the 1990s cartoon for much fuller experience.
4 The animation of the Symbiote is not fluid enough, some parts are really good (read 1) some are down right terrible (this is coming from a trained 3d animator, me, I have a Masters in 3d simulation and animation).
5 There is no tongue!!!
6 The voice hardly changes!!!!!! (I especially point to this because I am an amateur voice actor).
7 There are hardly if any smart-alik remarks during the fighting (in general through the film), but especially so for Venom, isn't that one of his main traits?
8 The claws are not part of the Symbiote, at least color wise.
9 Venom's time on screen was WAY TOO SHORT, ~30 minutes.
Hopefully the bonus features on the DVD will be worthwhile...
I haven't seen the film yet and I already gathered a long time ago half of the gripes you cited were going to be present... in any event thanks for the dime-store review. 🙂
Now... imagine if Venom had been a girl like originally planned oh so many years ago; we'd have gotten some cute girl getting that skin-tight costume on her instead of Eric Foreman lol. 🙂
If you're a true hardcore fan of venom, youll know they did everything correct.
I loved it up until one point, I think youll all know when...
The voice was perfect, it was dark, sort of sarcastic, maybe even seductive sounding to a point? That's venom, that was perfect, it didnt have to sound like the cartoon.
Eddie's personality was perfect, he couldve been more muscular, but he didnt really get buff until AFTER he got the symbiote anyway.
The symbiote was good on peter, it worked out fine and really showed just how drastically the suit really changes a person.
Overall, if you've been with venom for a long time and are a hardcore fan of symbiotes, youll know they did Venom just fine.

Anyway, I hope this helps and is similarly felt by the rest of you.
My animation may be delayed by my disappointment in the multimillion dollar screw up.
Spoiler:
1. I disagree the animation is perfectly fine throughout the film
2.No one seems to care so get over it
3. It never changed for Spider-man why should the rules change for Venom?
4.Congratulations we're all enthralled with joy for you but the animation is fine, not many people have a problem with it.
5.Yeah read response two for that
6.You seem to repeat yourself alot so you actually only have 7 reasons
7.Yeah, he did in the 616 comics have a few but that's not a huge thing for him in this film seems to be spidey's thing
8. In some of the comics he actually does have claws it varies from artist to artist originally though you're right he didn't. like most things it isn't a big deal.
9.It's likely from interviews he'll be in the 4th as well but i was to disapointed in this

I agree 100%. Anyone who's read Amazing Spider-man #300 (Venom's first full appearence), knows that the movie's, with some minor details, version of Venom is spot on.
I'm sick of people whining that he has no tounge. For the record, he does have a tounge, its just not like more recent artist's renditions, where its long as hell and made a huge focal point. Todd McFarlane's (aka the original/very first Venom design) Venom never had a huge tounge or anything close.

Spoiler:
1. They didn't look bad at all to me or anyone that isn't a certified "animator" and the mass populous isn't, so. . .whatever.
2. Who ****ing cares? Anyone who's both under twelve and is aware enough to read comic books. Whoopty-doo, he has no crazy tongue. I couldn't care less.
3. A friend of mine said to me after the movie that he thought there would be a deeper more menacing voice but he was much more freaked out by Eddie's voice only being slightly distorted. If you like your Venom to sound like James Earl Jones, then again, whatever.
4. Read 1.
5. Read 2.
6. Read 3. Did you want to get the job yourself? What does it matter that you're a voice actor.
7. So. . .the whole darker tone thing gets thrown out the window doesn't it? Venom/Eddie never made any smart remarks past "We'll eat your brains!" Even Ultimate Eddie Brock, which is much closer to this one than 616 was basically depressed while with the symbiote. Sorry if the movie wasn't funny enough for you, it's not supposed to be a knee-slapper.
8. Read 2 and 5. Whoopty-doo. He doesn't have defined claws. No one cares.
9. That was all he needed. I do admit, I would have liked a bit more time to dissect the character of Venom when paired with Eddie instead of just "Oh, thirty minutes later he has already mastered web-slinging and has found Sandman." But regardless, he didn't NEED that much time to kick the amount of ass he kicked, which is the only reason he's here in the movie.
I agree with you, Mobra. Venom looked awesome in the movie. The only thing that should have been different would be his build. Of course, his build really isn't that much of a big deal. Although Venom looked different in the movie from the comics, it really doesn't matter. Sam Raimi, probably, wanted to make a "movie version" of the comic book characters, just like what he did with the Green Goblin. Hopefully, Venom will appear in the next Spiderman movie. Maybe even his own movie...
I've watched Venom's scenes on youtube & I think that Topher Grace did a great job but if Venom returns in the next Spider-Man film he needs to have much more on screen time. Also, I'd just like to go on & say that a lot of you are complaining over nothing. Venom had no extremely long tongue. So what? Who wants to see a dude licking his tongue out in every which direction anyway? Venom was basically a mixture of the 616 version & the Ultimate version & that's good enough for me.
Yeah, I'm hoping that Sam Raimi won't act like a bastard & will make Venom return & spawn the symbiote that bonds with Cletus Cassidy. Venom needs to return because of the fact that Carnage is also tied into his story & he needs to be in the next film. But, what I see probably happening is that Venom will have a whole trilogy, like the whole Goblin Jr, thing except Venom will spawn Carnage & Carnage will spawn some other symbiotes.
i actualy read the novelization of the movie and the way eddie brock is portrayed is way better in my opinion. in the movie they just barely showed him and when they did it was just topher being an a**hole. in the book, they portray him as an insecure guy who tries to cover up for it and unintentionally comes across like a total jerk, you know? they also go deeper into peter taking gwen from him.
over all it just makes you feel much more sympathetic with him and makes the part where hes in the church asking God to kill peter parker and then gets the suit a lot more powerful.
