I don't see how locking a kid in a basement for a few hours is so bad a punishment, no different than locking them in their room. Well, there is one difference, they won't enjoy being locked in the basement, it will actually be a punishment, whereas locking them in their room is just an invitation to let them play with their stupid toys and what not.
