It is a Sin to Tell a Lie but it is not Against the Law of Government unless under Oath. Though it is Immorale in the Public eye. Lieing to the a Police Officer isnt against the Law either but if the lie consists of something to do to protect/hide someone who has done a crime then it is a crime in itself because of Aiding and Abeding.
