In my 20+ years in the Army the furthest i lived from work was 7 miles, and i drove.
Every other place i was stationed i was between 2 1/2 - 5 miles, and i ran with all my day's gear strapped to my back.
I preferred running. No traffic, no looking for parking, helped burn off the night's liquor....
