I doubt that they'll bring any other characters in, Whedon stated that he wanted to keep it simple, that's why he choose who he did. Their powers are easy to understand, aren't complex, and don't raise too many questions

Astonish is primed for battle with Jean's foe's. That's what i think they're getting at. When the Phoenix does return, that will be the teams primary adversary. So who would want to destroy the Phoenix. Someone interested in Scott and his power, his optic blast.
Keep an eye on Cyclops in this book. Who he runs into and where he blasts that eye beam. It might foretell who they will face.
