Gambit was a 'villain' at one point, even outside of the Thieves Guild.
Around age 18 Gambit's powers began to flare out of control, and he was subjected to brain surgery in order to help control them. Mister Sinister, who had performed the surgery, made a deal with Gambit in order to even their debts. In return for the surgery, Gambit would lead Sinister's team of Marauders into the Morlock Tunnels. Sinister had his own agenda against the Morlocks, as they were founded by the Dark Beast (the Age of Apocalypse counterpart of Beast,) and DB had been the student of the AoA Sinister. Recognizing his own studies being applied elsewhere, Sinister attempted to destroy the 'plagarism.'
Gambit did lead the Marauders to the Morlocks, though he claims he did not take part in the killing, nor was he aware of the true intent of the mission. He managed to save a young Morlock named Sarah, who would later grow to be Marrow, the leader of Gene Nation. Whether he is lying about his participation in the Mutant Massacre is unknown, as Remy's apparent psionic powers keep others from investigating his mind. The only other person who would know, besides the now-defunct Marauders, is Sinister, and he hasn't said anything. It appears Sinister only engaged himself with Gambit to achieve this goal, and to create a situation in which Gambit and a shapeshifting friend would go back in time, and Sinister would somehow be able to adapt the shapeshifting powers into himself, as he did, which explains a great amount of his powers.

Favorite villain: Take a damn guess...
Least favorite villain: Mojo. Hated the ENTIRE concept of Mojo...Except Spiral. I dig Spiral.
Villain who scares the bejeezus out of me: After thinking about this for a looong time, I'm going to go with Proteus. Stealing someone's life-force while putting them through their own personal hell. Damn. Give me someone who will just claw my guts out over that any day.
Biggest threat: Too close to call. Magneto, Apocalypse or Sinister probably. Unless Dark Phoenix is in there. Then it's no contest.
