Russ Meyer (dead this week at 82) was at first glance a peddler of soft core porn. Look a little closer and you find a very clever and talented maverick director who used his formal photographic training and intelligence behind the camera to make exactly the kind of films he wanted. Mostly putting his own comedic fantasies about dominant large chested women on screen, yet within that framework he somehow managed to make these quirky sometimes quite surreal movies seem like works of art.
Grindhouse fair for sure, but then so is Tarantino and we call him an auture. It's cool and credible to profess a love of super-violent horror and eastern blood splattered kung-fu, but not so fashionable to say you love soft-core porn. Russ Meyer died and I for one will be celebrating his weird lifes work this weekend with a beer, a Meyerfest on DVD and a box of kleenex!
