Banning people and not saying why or entering into dialog about it is all part of the climate of fear that helps KMC run "smoothly" If Mod-Squad behavior was open to scrutiny people would be less afraid : which would dilute the power. Fear of banning is the bitter oil that KMC runs on. (and runs damn smoothly, I'm filled with just as much admiration as i am disgust.)
The promoting of the populace (users) into mods and giving them "powers" - and keeping the rule structure that they enforce deliberately vague so that some people are punished for infringements and some are not is a classic control method. It promotes uncertainty - you are far more afraid to step over the line when you are not sure where the line IS.
It's proven to work bloody well as a system - which is why it's popular in corporate business and in oppressive political systems.
If other tactics don't work (For eg: if you speak out against the state you are branded unpatriotic or in KMC parlance a "troll"馃槈 and if you can't be tamed or controlled - you're dead meat. TH got "disappeared" by the state for saying what the above reminded him of. He said what he thought - and history has taught us that people who say what they think seldom last long.
