IM pretty sure hes a goblan. Rin was attacked by wolves, and killed. Before than Sesshomaru was nearly killed by Inuyasha's Wind Scar, but thanks to Tensaiga his life was saved, and he was transported somewhere in to the forrest. During this time Rin tried to take care of him and feed him. Though Sesshomaru, was reluctent for her help, she continoued. OK soo shy dies and Sesshomaru finds her, and then his Tensaiga starts pulsating. When this happen the sword is trying to influence him. This time to save the young girl, so he used his sword to save her, and for some reason let her follow. There's also a story with her and Naraku but I think you know that one
