This has yet to be confirmed by anyone and can possibly be considered supported speculation:
"The action is huge. I don't want to spoil one of the huge action beats that's in this... but it comes when Lex, having stolen something Kryptonian... an object we're all familiar with, does something twisted and scientific to it, then uses it completely without thinking of the possible side effects which are... world altering in scale... something that only a Superman could lessen the impact of."

Assuming this is true, Lex Luthor uses this newly modified weapon to try and eliminate or kill Superman once and for all. Thus leading us to the part of the film where Superman is being held inside of a hospital for medical care and treatment. (That information comes from set reports in which 1000 Superman Returns extras were lined up outside of a hospital holding up signs with pictures exactly like the one pr posted.)
i think singer might have made a mistake in using a 'classic' costume. a film being made years after reeve's superman yet still maintaining the old fashioned tights just seems out of place... i was kinda hoping they might try using synthetic fiber like they did with spiderman. the red and blue tights just don't seem to fit the common audience nowadays. still, just my opinion though.
I think they should of based the suit on Alex Ross's drawings...the S is way way too small (i think it's cool that it's a protroduing S though) ....the boots are too low....the neckline is completely off...and the red is a bit too dark....the Brandon Routh costume (at least from what i've seen) is awful

Chaos on Superman Returns Set
Pranksters cause problems on the set during stunt sequences involving cars.
According to the Daily Telegraph there was a theft on the set of Superman Returns, in which the crew's walkie talkies were stolen and filming was forced to be halted.
Pranksters caused chaos during a stunt sequence, being filmed in Martin Place last week, by shouting "cut" and "action" over the airwaves, writes Michael Bodey.
It's believed the thieves with the walkie talkies listened in to much of the night's filming to learn key phrases which they later yelled at key moments.
Unfortunately, the mischief almost caused serious injury, with the night's filming centering on a Mustang car jumping down steps and landing between extras. It stopped dangerously a number of times.
Two reinforced Mustangs were used for the stunts and one of them broke a crankshaft on landing and had to be carted away by a forklift.
After a couple of close shaves, production was shut down while the second unit, staffed predominantly by Australians, changed all the radio frequencies on the walkie talkies.
Superman Returns continues to film around Sydney and at Fox Studios.
