Normally they look as close as they can get. Don't think I know nothing about film like most people here, lol. I hope they don't waste a lot of time trying to make us think that Sandman is cool by having him take down an armored truck. It seems like its just going to pay off as if they were saying "Hey look kids, he took down an ARMORED TRUCK. That's cool, isn't it? Isn't it? No...well...too bad that's all your getting cause the scene after this is going to be another whimpering Peter scene."
He might be ok, but in comparison to all the other villains they could've focused their time on, its sad that we're getting him. I just still can't get past the fact that the only reason we have one of the lamest villains in the Spider-Man gallery is because the main star and the director are playing favorites. You can't justify it any other way.
Some arguments you might think of making but shouldn't:
1. Pick a popular villain - Sandman's definitely not one of the most popular villains. Not even close.
2. Villain has a connection to the hero - None at all. He's a common thief who's even bad at that. The ones that have a good connection are those like Venom, Harry, Lizard.
3. We want to go new levels with CGI - Sand isn't anything new. We've had sand look real for years now.
I still just think that we're going to stand in line all pumped up for the best Spider-Man movie yet, and we're going to end up getting an hour and forty five minutes worth of "I know I wasted a lot of time in the first two movies saying I only love Mary Jane, but now that this blonde is here too, I guess I just need to get laid." and then we'll get 15 minutes of Sandman doing something stupid, and the other 15 minutes will be used to explain the plot and have characters like JJJ, Eddie, and Harry.
People, let's leave the jokes aside for a sec.
What is wrong with Sandman?!
I mean there will be Venom (played by Topher Grace). He is mad at Peter because he "ruined" his life.
There will be Harry which means the Green Goblin will also be in the movie. He is mad at Peter 'cause he thinks he killed his father
There will be John Jameson/Man-wolf who will be (probably) mad because of Marry Jane leaving him at the wedding.
I think Sandman fits perfectly in the situation. They could have chosen Hydroman but Sandman is better in this case because he does not have any personal relationship with Peter or Mary Jane or someone else close to Spiderman. His only purpose in the movie will be making damage and complicating things. He may be a lousy thief but when it comes to damage he is a good "shot".
So what is wrong with Sandman?!

Ummm how do you know that's his storyline in the movie??

And to think we could of had Electro or the Lizard.They're worthy successors to Ock.
Electro, Venom in a bigger role, Lizard, Scorpion, Carnage (well I shouldn't count him since we'd have to have V-boy first but still), Shocker even....<------- better and cooler than Sandman.
The only reason...and I mean, the ONLY reason we got Sandman, is because Raimi likes him. That's it. There's no other explanation.

As far as I know from what I've read in articles they do not want to make 4th movie.
But it is announced that Topher Grace will be playing Eddie Brock and his role will be a major one. That makes me believe Venom will be in the movie but they just haven't announced that yet.
And another thing. To make three Spiderman movies and not to include Venom, Spiderman's nemesis, in none of them... It will be a mockery towards the fans.
About Sandman being boring... Well, the point of view determines that. And just as you said NoFate - Raimi likes him. A point of view. Perhaps sad that it's his point perhaps not. We will see. But as I said earlier I think Sandman is the best choice here although I agree Shocker or Electro, or Lizard, or perhaps Carnage (I am such a fan of that freak) would have been much more fun.
ok, Alex, they r making a 4th... go to Spiderman 4.. anyway Venom I believe will fight and appear to be beaten by Harry and Peter. I think he will reappear in the last (6th prob) with Carnage. Harry dies from being to close to the explosion that blew Venom sky high and dies also. Sandman I hope gets killed by Venom. Anyway look at the 3 villains.

Green Goblin 2 - storyline
Venom - fan fav.
They want this to be the best and will prob have a huge fight scene at the end with the 4 super people.
