James Bond RPG

First things first… (Bond, TWINE)

When you play in an RPG, the most important thing is that you know who you will play. One of the first things you should know is if you’ll play a male or a female and of course the name of the character. This is James Bond, this isn’t nuclear fission… names as Chew-Mi, Plenty O’Toole or the unforgettable Pussy Galore have been used already, so do not fear if your name sounds a bit foolish.

So, you established a name…
To make the gaming more fun, you are asked to make a little biography. This does NOT mean you have to pen down a four page essay, just stick to describing the eye- and hair color of your character, how tall perhaps (s)he is and other features that can be fun to know (i.e. does the character have any scars or enemies?).
The last thing you have to decide now, is the job your character will play. The most common one is of course playing a double-oh agent (like James Bond), but you can play a Scientist (Kal, like Doctor Goodhead or Doctor Jones) or an assassin (Clov, Grant in FRWL or Bond in LTK), but you are free to take up any other jobs, but if you do, please contact the GM.

Would you like to see my figures? (Cigar Girl, TWINE)

Great! We got the characters appearance, now the abilities …
This could for first-timers sound already scary, but have no fear, the explanation will clarify it all.
Abilities are divided into: Strength (STR), Dexterity (DEX), Constitution (CON), Intelligence (INT), Wisdom (WIS) and Charisma (CHA).

Strength measures your character’s muscle and physical power (think Jaws).

Dexterity measures hand-eye-coordination, agility, reflexes and balance. This also works for short-range weapons or any sort of driving (Bond has a high Dex).

Constitution represents your character’s health and stamina. (Grant in FRWL went through a whole training to gain a good constitution to fight Bond)

Intelligence represents how good your character learns and reasons (Look at the doctors: Goodhead & Jones, they have a high intelligence).

Wisdom represents willpower, common sense, perception and intuition (This is also high in Bond but you can bet M has it too).

Charisma measures a character’s force of personality, persuasiveness, personal magnetism, ability to lead and physical attractiveness (A bondgirl normally has a high charisma).

So now you know what it all stands for and on what you want to have high points. Because the higher the points you have on it, the better you are (ranked out of 20).
But how do you get good points? Well … there are two ways, namely:

1) You take the “package”; this means that no matter what, you get these points:
15, 13, 12, 11, 10 and 8
2) You use dice to find out, but since this is the internet, the best way to do this is let the
Game Master (GM) throw the dice.

What are the advantages? Well, with the package, you know what you’ll get and have only one number under 10. (Note that 10 and also 11 are common numbers for “normal” people.) With the other, you have to gamble. You can have better numbers but also less; but it should in the end result in pretty much the same.

Half of everything is luck, James (Alec, Goldeneye)

We’re about to finish the character, we only need to finish up some last stats.
We have to get Luck and HP.

What is what? Luck is what keeps you from being hit. When someone shoots at you, it doesn’t mean they will hit you. They can miss you, or not. But even if they don’t, you have this number that will save your butt a few times. In other words… it’s like extra HP you get.
These are solid for the time being.
If you’re a double-oh agent, you get 8 Luckpoints + the result of one dice with 8 sides from the GM.
An assassin gets 10 Luckpoints + the result of one dice with 8 sides from the GM and a scientist only 6 + the result of one dice with 8 sides from the GM.
A thief has to count on luck too if (s)he does not wish to get caught, therefore they get 8 Luckpoints + the result of one dice with 8 sides from the GM.

HP: If you play games, you’ll know that HP means Health Points. This are your real points, the lower they get the more injured you are. I want to stress out that if your HP reaches 0, you are NOT dead.
This is the real deal: at -10 you’re dead, but it takes some time to get there of course. At
-5 you absolutely need to get treatment or you’ll lose blood. At 0 you are knocked down and are unconscious.
How do you get HPs?
You, or at least the GM, throws one dice with 12 sides and adds 4 to the final result.

You’ll need this one, James (Felix Leiter, License to Kill)

We are now only a few steps away of completing your character. One important thing to get now is your Defense.
What is this? To explain this, we have to go a bit deeper into the rules of how a Dungeons & Dragons game works. Namely… in this game almost everything is decided by a dice with 20 sides. To decide if a character gets hit by a bad-guy, the bad-guy has to throw such a 20-sided dice, the result he throws has to be higher than a set number the character has. If it is lower, he misses, if it is equal or higher, the character gets hit by the bad-guy.

How do you know which defense-number you have? They are set.
Namely:
The secret-agent and assassin have it at 15.
The thief has one of 14 as has the scientist.

His name is Jaws, he kills people! (James Bond, Moonraker)

You are so incredibly close to finishing your character! But I had a spare quote so I tried to use it for this one.
You have your stats and all, but now … how do you hurt another person?
Double-ohs and assassins are carrying guns normally… They can shoot people as long as they don’t run out of bullets.
I have thought about this for a little while and it seemed better if I did NOT include the stats for guns and bullets because then it would get too complicated. For now it will be that if a person hits a bad-guy (this is also done by a throw of a 20-sided dice, but by the GM, so you have nothing to worry about), the GM will determine the damage (also with a role but depending on the gun and bullet being used).
So in other words… This section didn’t give you any new information.

Last round James! (Alec Travylian, Goldeneye)

Ok! This is the last part, I promise!
In order to give everyone even more of a difference between each other, people can chose from the following list 3 (THREE) skills:

alertness
balance
climb
combat expertise
computer use
demolitions
dodge
escape artist
jump
martial arts
nimble
precise shot
stealthy
track
trick
treat injury

I do not think that it is needed to go into detail what those skills will do in the game. It is clear that alertness i.e. will raise reflexes in the game, making it harder to get hit etc.

Shocking, positively shocking (James Bond, Goldfinger)

Guess what! You’re finished! You have your own character now and are ready to go!
