Shadows of the Empire

I have a question about SOTE, is it an alternate plot within the trilogy, or is it a part of the storyline, preferably between Empire and Jedi?

The reason I say this is because Darth Vader is still alive in it, and evil.

It is between Empre and Jedi yes. It's considered part of the storyline
