Nope. It's because he was a complete ******* to the Straw Hats at the very beginning of the arc. Hell, it was because of him that Usopp's inferiority complex sky rocketed. His backstory is fairly uninteresting and the design is not that cool. Worst of all though is him being the "Father" of the Straw Hat family. Really Oda? I know he is older than all of them but that's a poor justification.
And compared to Paulie, the one I would have hoped to join the crew, and Franky is fairly uninteresting. He's just boring and still has shades of being a dick.
Neptune's sons are all much smaller than him, with his daughter being absolutely enormous, even larger than him (And hawt), with his wife being far smaller than even the smallest of her sons.
So, Big Mam doesn't need to be smaller naturally to have given birth to Lola... In fact, it raises far less disturbing questions than Otohime giving birth to Shirahoshi.
