too old to drive?

You can't really make a global age for everyone to be considered "too old". (Although I wouldn't be opposed to it, it would just make alot of people pissed off). Some people stay sharp behind the wheel all of their lives, while others should not be driving past 60.

I think it would be beneficial if everyone had to retake a drivers exam once they hit a certain age, and if they pass it, then they get to keep driving, if they fail, then they can retake it a few years later if they want to.

Also, I think it should be required that they take a test every 5 years or so after the initial test to stay sure that they are capable of being safe drivers.

Obviously, something needs to be done about the poor driving skills that some senior citizens possess.

perfect post! ✅ I agree 100%

I don't really understand the comment about the back of the bus. Don't slow kids have their own bus?

Some interesting views, especially considering the controversy in Australia recently reguarding age and driving, although its the oppisite, people want changes made to the learner system, ie, to affect young drivers, as it seems in many cases it is 25 year and under people who are having the most accidents (which result in fatalities).... although I do agree we should all have a series of tests throughout our driving life at regular intervals to insure we remain safe.

Not all old people are bad drivers just some of them.

(In honor of bush winning I am useing republican colors today!)
Anyway old people could drive but there are some who drive so slowly that my dad or stepmom skips right over them.,
I am not trying to be unfair or mean but I think when you get to a certain age like maybe seveny or higher you should not be allowed to drive.JM 😕

i've read in today's orange county register that a senior (quite old) citizen accidentally crushed a kid with car. the car jumped the curb and hit the kid (15 YO) then hitting the wall. another incident... a 75 YO guy accidentally drove into a crowd of kids killing two young girls ages 6 and 7. he claims that he mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake.

should there be a maximum driving age?

no disrespect for our seniors, but when you're too old to distinguish between a brake pedal and an accelerator, which has a big difference in size too, you should not be allowed to drive legally.

we had the same type of incident here a couple of years ago where a 70+ man drove down a closed off to the public street..it was closed for neighborhood party/market,so everyone was in the street. he drove down the entire street hitting everyone in his path...he claimed the same thing "he mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake." I think he hit like 11 people.

I would hate to take anyones right to drive away from them and to seniors sometimes immobility is a death sentence, but there should be some kind of mandatory driving test for seniors.I think that would be fair.

Then what do you say to those who are seventy or older and don't live in assisted living who need to drive to get around? If they don't have family members around to drive them, they'd be basically stranded at their house. They sure as hell can't walk. Like I said, I think they need to improve public transportation for Senior Citizens before they can just take their licenses away. Or at least provide some way for them to get from place to place.

wait...aren't you in Illinois???

I KNOW there was an incident like this in a outdoor Los Angeles Market place like last year.

The old man did the same thing with the gas and the accelerator. Then after hitting several people and objects, his airbag went off and incapacitated him while his foot was still on the accelerator.

We've had a few incidents in the UK over the last few years involving OAP's driving down motorways the wrong way because they got confused at a junction and drove down an off ramp. Because they then drive on the left hand side which being the fast lane is kind of scary 70MPH + 70MPH collision speed of 140MPH... 😱

totally agree. but here in OC, we have OCTA and they provide shuttle service for the handicappes and the aged. it's not the most efficient system, but it gets some people around. i think the president should provide some platform about this issue. it is a big safety issue especially when driving at high speeds. it would also be good if the medical insurance companies would give an option to the senoirs.

Here we have a bus line called the palm tran who is for anyone but the only people that tend to ride it are seniors, DUI offenders, and immigrants. And I have to say it's routes are pretty spotty, especially for someone who is elderly or disabled and can't get far on foot. I have no idea what they would all do without cars, because you sure as hell can't rely on the palm tran. My best friend had to move to Rhode Island because his mom got a DUI and had no way to get around down here, and she's perfectly capable of walking a few blocks. So just think how hard it'd be for an elderly person.

well, here the bus actually drops you at the doorstep of where you need to be... literally. it's pretty good, but it needs to be expanded.

i htink there should be a limit, or they need to take some tests, like every year after a certin age, coz in australia an old person, drove a car into a park bench, with kids on it, i cant rememebr if any one died, but that would of hurt
