some you may know...others you may not . either way , here goes..

mollify

DEFINITION: (verb) to soothe or calm; to appease

EXAMPLE: The Tired Hiker tried to mollify the angry customer by promising him a full refund.

SYNONYMS: abate, pacify, quell

Example - Shellie's healthy independence of thought is desirable, a way forward, a hedge against intellectual atrophy.
