Because when he goes to fight a villain in metropolis, where is he going to put his cape? If he throws it off, like you suggest, it'd destroy the city!

i seriously think they should keep the underpants. Even though YES YES they might look strange and weird and what not, but this is superman we are talking about. Superman's probably the only one who can get away with red underpants. So lets not change the tradition.

anyways, never thought about everything else everybody said about the cape. all good points. imagine getting smacked by that thing while superman flies by.
