All Warlock's ever done is out-smarted Thanos (turning to stone aside, which Thanos evidently wanted to happen). In a straight-up fight he loses every time, despite his power.
The soul gem adds an interesting element to it, but as he's never directly used it on Thanos we can't say for sure....it's just speculation.

In Infinity Abyss Warlock used the soul gem on a Thanos clone. Warlock said he feared adding Thanos' spirit to his own, and after he uses the gem on the clone it really messes him up and he has a really difficult time controlling it. Thanos later tells him no clone has the power or clarity of the original and that his own spirit is much darker than the clone.
