The Dementors are "depression personified," but yes, that Grim Reaper Image is used alot in fantasy - Tolkein certainly didn't make it up!

Some people don't like Harry Potter for the same reason that some don't like cumberland sausage...

Its because they have no taste...

i didn't like the first 2 books either i didn't like the first book at all, so i idn't finish it then, i read the second one a couple months later and then the third one got me hooked. i used to call people who read harry potter witches and made fun of them, i was a new person after i read harry potter.

ok...JK might have taken the idea from there , but also might have not.... all those creatures are part of mythology ... and mythology belongs to no one... neither to JK nor to Tolkin... ok !

I know why I hate it.... I luv to read but the (Sorry I had to count which book it waz) fith book is too long!!!

go a chapter at a time then thats what i did but let yourself get carried away if you need a break pause after each chapter youll find that if you do youll end up reading 3-5 chapters at a time before needing a break

Those who say they hate / dont like LOTR - count me in! never read the books & dont intend to - watched all 3 movies - it's over-rated. simple plot, too much ado.

nobody here says the HP book readers are immature - they understand that a book of 800+ pages CANT be for kids only.

BTW, i dont think JKR copied the ringwraiths - Dementors dont ride horses & carry swords or any weapon. Dementors are waaay cooler - they kiss!

The thing is alot of people are Christian so they might not be allowed to read Harry Potter and I think Lord of the Rings is best suited for their rules, it's not always in the matter of what is better it's in the matter of the person.

If there is an arguement about if JKR copied Tolkien or not let me tell you this now.

She did not copy, she was influenced by Tolkien's writing, she even said it herself.

And if another argument about how JKR copied Tolkien or not, I'll have Phoe close this thread.

Racyroo said if me and weasel didn't talk about harry potter for 24 hours she would give us £1. Obviously i couldn't do it, we suddenly was chattin about harry potter again (and rach was in the convo) completely not realising we were, untill i said 'hey, we're talking about hp you no'

I tryed to turn this deal around saying, if me and weasel didn't talk about it for a week (that would be extreamly hard as we couldn't even last an hour when we tryed the day) then rach would have to read one of the books. i think she was temped cus we wouldnt talk about for a WHOLE 168 hours, but she said no cus she will not give in to reading the book.
So i think my idea about forcing to read the book is out. She won't even come to the cinema to watch the third film with us.

So anyway, rach, why don't you like harry potter? and how can i make you read it?

In fact I don't agree with this. Although my personal opinion goes in line that JK didn't copy anyone, but on another hand if ppl think oposite they should be able to say it, if they think so. And Whats this bullsh.. about closing the thread, I'm afraid that thats too much. What u think?

If someone thinks that JKR copied off of LotR it's wrong, and if there's a big breakout of that, I'll have Phoe close this.
