More by sensory than vision. But why ask why? Even though we get to see how the 101 viewed the surroundings it was only an aid for the audience. There is no way that the terminator actually has to view things through a graphical user ingterface and choose and analyze things from different menus. Its just like the computer your using right now: does it know it exists? Does your computer need to look at stuff to know what it's doing.
