That's the truth about life, dude. Get used to it. 😛 We can't all be friends. In Middle-earth, they all can't get along because there's Evil, which of course is the root of all dispute and squabble. And why is there Evil and not just all good? Because Arda will turn out to be very perfect if all of its inhabitants are getting along, and it's not so nice to be perfect. So here comes Melkor to represent the presence of Evil. Whether he's Evil in nature or Evil at will, it's all open to interpretation, but one is certain, he's there to create a balance in Middle-earth. Not always good, not always happy, people are not always friends, not always getting along.
And why not all just get along? Because apart from the presence of Evil, every people have different interests, attitudes, opinions, behaviors, or same love interest, you name it. And because of that differences, strife, arguments and disagreements begin to spring and it's not surprising that it will end up having horrible results and start chain of events. Also, think about it, if we're all friends, we wouldn't be able to appreciate them since there's no "enemy". If there's no enemy, what's very special in having "friends"? It's good having friends, but it wouldn't be very special like they are right now if every person in the planet is your friend. Also, some people like Melkor, Sauron and their minions that the people of Middle-earth are not getting along with have to be present to make us appreciate the glories and the success and the good things that we're having.
Without darkness, could we enjoy, understand, appreciate the light?
Without the storm, would the calm mean as much?
Without evil, would "good" be so, well, good?
Perhaps Eru, in his wisdom, knew that in order for creation to have deeper freedom, there was need for Melkor and the evil that he brought. Creation was suddenly given a choice...although it sounds strange...they were not "enslaved" to good. They were able to chose Eru and the way of the Valar, or Darkness and the way of Melkor.
So if there's good and evil, we all can't get along and be friends forever.
Same goes with the occurences in our real world. Maybe the Nazis before didn't really think of themselves as Evil, but there are always two sides of everything. And because of that two sides, it's impossible for each and everyone to be friends.
This came out as a post about good and evil, but I think it's close enough to the reason why we can't all get along. Put it this way, life needs a little "spice" sometimes.. 🙂
