Like I had posted,...the term shounen-ai is not used as often in Japan; the wasei-eigo construction Boys Love (boizu rabu) but usually rendered as English, occasionally spelled Boy's Love or Boys' Love, or abbreviated BL) has largely displaced it, due to associations of the original term with pederasty or pedophilia (which were not borrowed into English usage). (This is doubly ironic, since the similar English term boylove has the exact meaning Boys Love was coined to avoid.)

What you said is like saying that you're an otaku but claiming that you mean it in a good way. Even though when otaku is used to mean other than your home, it's derogatory.

Shounen ai isn't as hard core... You're right about that. But how many manga are going to show 12-year-old boy couples having sex with each-other? And how many YAOI doujinshi do have uneraged sex scenes in them? Hmm? Common American Internet usage? What you mean to say is that as far as you know, yaoi isn't inappropriate... If you want to talk about American Internet usage and boys love, you should be calling it "slash" instead... Which is the English word for the fandom.

Now, just look at this site and try to say that YAOI doesn't also encompass sexually explicit boy and boy and sometimes in bad cases underage boy on man action. http://www.boysonboysonfilm.com/news/ Don't try to argue with me just because I don't like YAOI. I have friends who are into slash and even though I don't like it, I don't tell them not to read or watch it. I don't like porn either, but I'm not going to try to say that people shouldn't watch it.

OWNED!! 😆

OWNED!!

There's a school of thought that says if you don't have anything intelligent to say, you should remain quiet. Then, there's the Robo-Chocobo school.

Lest I be accused of hypocracy, I'll include another, on-topic comment; if shounen ai isn't hard-core (as Saber_Apricot admits), and if yaoi is just shounen ai with underage participants (as Saber_Apricot) claims, than what, exactly, is all the hard-core stuff without underage guys? Saber_Apricot has relegated it to some sort of undefined limbo with her definitions.

As a side-note, the Japanese age of consent can be as low as thirteen in some parts of Japan. I just thought that people should be aware of this before they try to use it in their definitions.

Hmm... I guess I wasn't very clear. Okay... Hardcore guy on guy manga without under aged boys is "YAOI," but YAOI can sometimes include under aged sex and/or rape. Some of them can be pretty graphic. >_> I guess a good example of something hardcore would be the section of YAOI manga that I saw in the honya (bookstore), within the Nagasakiya by the Obihiiro train station. One YAOI manga cover had a man in bondage, bent over with some type of sex toy shoved up his ass... There was blood too. I thought that I was going to go blind. (>_<😉 In Japan, they don't cover up books if there's explicit stuff on the covers.

Other example is this link ...Don't look if you don't want to see a guy and guy sex scene.

I'm arguing with you because you're wrong. It's not quite the same thing. And you can stop trying to pretend that Wikipedia is some sort of end-all source because anybody can write anything in Wikepedia, and it will stay there unless someone cares enough to change it.

But since we're quoting other people's definitions and pretending it proves something, the definitions I'm using are from the Anime News Network.

Well, I could just tell you that I know a good amount about manga and I did live in Japan for half a year, so I have seen sections of graphic manga. Also, some of my friends have been or are still into YAOI and I have look through some doujinshi and manga.

You know, I looked at Anime News Network post on shounen-ai and it said basically the same thing, but it was less detailed:

The Japanese words "shounen" and "ai" individually mean "boy" and "love," which is exactly what shounen-ai means, boy-love. It refers to anime and manga that focus on love and romance (as opposed to sex) between boys or men (typically bishounen).

Some shounen-ai is pornographic but much of it is not. Examples of shounen-ai include Gravitation, Seimaden, Earthian, and Mirage of Blaze.

Of late, it has become increasingly popular in North America for shounen-ai titles to be labelled "yaoi," both by fans and distributors. http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/lexicon.php?id=26

So, I don't know why you're complaining about Wikepedia's definition...

Saber_Apricot please be careful with links like those. There were a couple of pics that are 18+ hentai.

ewww guy on guy sex. 😘

Sorry, WinDancer... >_> I shouldn't have posted that link.

No harm done. 🙂

btw-Very interesting and excellent posts. You've done great research on the subject. 👆

I don't know if it's real research. I've been buying manga for quite some time... >_> You learn a lot of stuff and meet a lot of weird people when you're into something like anime and manga. I guess it would be the same if I was a Star Trek fan or something.
