The scalping, actually, was done on Native Americans, rather than other way arround. It was the way of proving you murdered them. Some used to give out rewareds to people who killed them.
I know scalping was a practice originally used on Indians, but didn't they eventually adopt the practice themselves? Anyways...
A similar thing was done with the Plains Buffalo herds--the government paid people to go out and shoot as many buffalo as they could. This was done for several reasons--the first being that the buffalo got in the way of trains, and trampled farmer's crops. The second, and I find this really disgusting, is that they were trying to destroy the plains Indian's way of life so they would be forced to move onto reservations. "Buffalo" Bill Cody, the famous gunslinger/frontiersman, got his nickname from a massive buffalo slaughter he participated in. It's just... disgusting... I can't think of a better word. 🙁 🙁 🙁
