Earthquake, Tidal Waves Kill More Than 3,000 in Asia (Update10)
Dec. 26 (Bloomberg) -- The strongest earthquake in 40 years struck the Indonesian island of Sumatra, unleashing tidal waves that killed more than 3,000 people in India, Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia.
The magnitude 8.9 quake, the fifth strongest in a century, triggered aftershocks across 2,000 kilometers (1,240 miles) of water, killing more than 2,600 people in India and Sri Lanka alone. The waves struck resorts in Thailand, Malaysia, the Andaman Islands and the Maldives filled with tourists for the year-end holidays.
Sri Lanka reported at least 1,650 deaths and appealed for international help. In India, more than 1,000 people died, Home Minister Shivraj Patil said. As many as 700 people died in Indonesia and 168 died and more than 2,000 were injured in Phuket and other southern beach areas in Thailand, Agence France-Presse said.
