I thought it was pretty plain, and just highlighted what happened on 9/11, as if nobody knew. Besides, the end was a total fabrication for the sake of patriotism.

The end was to give the film some life. It is a movie afterall, not a documentary. I wouldn't say it's completely farfetched. Something went wrong with that plane. Instead of ending it like, "Oh, this terrorist doesn't know how to fly a plane," or "Oops, plane ran out of gas," they went with a more dramatic ending which was well played.
