Theater:
Captain Phillips. Quite good. Reminded me a bit of United 93, similar style. Not as strong as that, but intense and somewhat moving.
12 Years a Slave: An absolute masterpiece. A stunning cinematic achievement and the best film ever made about slavery. One of the best films I've seen in years, with a level of acting that is near unmatched. It's emotionally devastating in a way few films are capable of being. Can't recommend it enough.
^ Penny for your thoughts, Kaz?
Recently watched:
The Lone Ranger - didn't really like (but I was recovering from my worst hangover ever, so may be an unfair judgement)
Queen of the Damned - entertaining, but also unintentionally funny at times.
Man of Steel - actually enjoyed it, some decent sci-fi.
The Lords of Salem:
I was very surprised to actually really like it, considering I really hated Rob Zombie's other movies. But this one is much different, not the same characters from his other films (thank god). This is the kind of movie he should be making. It's low budget, but it employs a slow pace to absorb you and get you identifying with the character(s). I dare say The Lords of Salem is actually kind of Kubrickian. Yeah, I couldn't believe it. It might become an annual Halloween horror movie for me. Honestly, for what it is, I give it 5 out of 5. I think the fact that John 5 did the music made it a much stronger film.
