Actually the price difference between B&W and color isn’t that big...I think he did it so you pay more attention to the dialogue (same reason Raging bull did it)(other then the comparison between real world hardship and the "perfect life" which was in color)

No, if you actually listened to Kevin Smith in interviews or the Clerks commentary track, he explains that the cost to process color film would have been more than he could handle. You have to remember he made Clerks with only $28,000. so even a price difference that "isn’t that big" to most movies would be huge to his budget.
