What thought process went into the creation of the Character Chancellor Palpatine played by Ian McDiarmid?
“Well, we wanted to give the Darkside its Queen. This was the perfect opportunity. Sidious' other identity allowed him to infiltrate all arenas as the Queen can move anywhere on the Chess Board. Rumors that were floating around that there were two separate entities were far from the truth. Evil does not play fair. In the Saga, Evil chose to attack with all it had. In Revenge, Evil sees losing its Queen as a non significant. After all, Evil was on top of its game in the Prequels. While that was the case, Good saw the opportunity to wait out its opponent. This fact laid the ground work for the Original Trilogy. There, Good had put itself in a position to counter with all its pieces spread throughout the Board (Force implied). That is where the idea of separating the twins, as well as Yoda and Obi-Wan's hiding originated. Good is spreading its pieces around until a later time in the Saga. Again, it’s not the characters who made this decision per say. The Force, or what they knew as the Force guided them. But, the Force, to each, is only half of what they know. It is Good and Evil who guide them.“ Chancellor Palpatine was created to be this type of powerful piece. That is why he was depicted as royalty.”
