Surprisingly, this practise to silence independent coverage of the war was even in use during Vietnam, and the 80s destruction of Latin America. With the US military arresting doctors naming how many civilian deaths are at their hospital beds, and clerics who identify the numbers of civilian casualties, and also with Al-Jazeera being barred from covering the elections, it seems that any "real" coverage of what's going on in Iraq is something unwanted.
