Not enough T1 love, so here is some more:

This makeup is a lot better then the one in T2. The lighting helps alot so you can't see the details that well. In T2 if you look carefully enough you can see that the mechanism is quite fake because there aren't any gaps between the jaw and the skull just black material. It's easy to see in the intense light of the steel mill. Also the eye moves a lot more in T1, or at least is positioned so it fits with the actor's real eye. In T2 the eye was moveable but they kept it stationary for the most part because they couldn't synch it up right with Arnie's real eye. Go figure.

The animatronic head is what really sells the effect. When you get a few close ups of the skin literally ripped off the jaw and you can not only see the pistons that move the jaw, but also teeth underneath the skin, you can really forget that's its a bunch of make up and a dummy head.

All in all, Arnie with blown off face looks best in T1, followed by T3, and last is T2. T3 would have been better, but the proportions look a bit off, which is weird because with CG they could have literally made it perfect.

Great detail was put into those heads, and I agree with you, it looks more realistic in T1 than the rest. I thought the T3 one looks very odd, too unrealistic, too much CGI.

When will they start to realise, CGI isnt always the answer !!

Well I'll give you this, you walk into the theater knowing it was CG, but at the same time, it doesn't have that "fake" quality that most CG has. The blend was really good and the effect itself is actually better. The reason the T1 version is more plausible is the proportions. The Terminator skull just doesn't seem to fit Arnold's facical structure for some reason and the machine eye, being bigger than the human eye makes it look awkward.

Also, Arnold acts much less like a machine in the third movie. His acting in the first was very machine like. In the second he sort of "became human" but he was still very focused and the little emotion he did show did not get in the way of the mission.

In the third movie he just doesn't act that machine like toward the end. It's his face, his expressions, his eyes. He looks like a human being that has prosthetics rather then a metal robot sheathed in human flesh.

One of the very few dynamic shots you can get of Arnold in T3 with his face ripped apart. It's a shame these scenes weren't longer because I would have liked to have grabbed a nice full body shot with the mechanical arm and leg and torso bit, but it's mostly "bust" shots or closeups.

Here is another one that I like just for the amount of detail. The damage doesn't make any sense, but it doesn't look fake, it just doesn't look how it should:

Now I just need to get some screen caps from the second one so we can have this big comparison of all three movies.

So to finish up here are a couple shots of the make-up effects for T2.

This is where we finally get to see some of the mechanism underneath the flesh. The earlier action scenes where the T1000 fires his Beretta are only hit the Terminator's back and reveal very little. The SWAT team of about ten officers armed with pistols and MP5s, however, have enough fire power to rip skin off the Terminator's face and chest. Pretty convincing here.

And here we have a later shot in the steal mill. The T1000 mercilessly battered our (literally) fearless hero into submission by smashing his face apart. He crawls toward the M79 grenade launcher and we get this pretty good shot of his face. Again, the makeup is very believable. It turns out that it only looks fake after the T1000 is destroyed. This is because the lighting is more intense and the Terminator's dialouge makes it so you can tell the "jaw mechanism" is actually stretching with the actor's skin.

All in all, it would rank up there with T1s if used in the proper lighting, but the last few emotional shots sort of kill it.

Very nice analysis there dude.

Yep you're perfectly right on most counts, although I stil prefer the T1 shots to all the rest, as it looked far more beleivable imo. These later ones, while were impressive, looked like a bunch of CGI hokey in certain shots.

I know what you mean. The bathroom fights in particular (and any other scene where Arnold or Kristanna is being thrown around in a violent manner) are very artificial. The first time I watched the movie in theaters I could instantly tell which scenes used CG and which didn't. The sad thing was, half the scenes that used CG could have used older tricks (like green screens) and looked better. (Particularly the decapitation scene with Arnold.) I think it would have been better to film his actual head and body and then made an image composite of the two images, rather then just CG the whole thing and make it look fake.

Apologies for it not being a Terminator picture, but I couldn't resist:

chris you da man

I second that, lol.

Nice man. Where do you get all those T2:3D pics. I have to admit that I did go on that ride when I lived in Florida, but I hadn't seen any of the movies at that point and I was pretty scared so I mostly kept my eyes closed. Little bit of a regret there. Had I been older I would have been able to appreciate it and then buy some of the merchandise in the gift shop. 🙂

oh man chris when you go there again trust me you're gonna have the time of your life. now that you know everything about the terminator movies

I usually do several searches before I find any new pics of T2:3D, but I can give you a few links I already have. http://www.schwarzenegger.it/speciali/t23dpics.html

I've been to Florida before, unfortunately I never saw saw T2:3D in person so consider yourself lucky lol. Some merchandise would be great, hopefully one day when I have enough money I can purchase myself an enitre Terminator collection, until then...

Needs more Reese:

That shotgun/bar sequence was one of the best from all three Terminator movies.

I can certainly agree to that. And it wasn't just the action but the set up. The corny disco, the slow motion, her looking at Kyle and still thinking he's the bad guy, and then all of a sudden Arnold starts to advanced drawing his gun, the disco fades into the background and the thumping of the Terminator music starts to blare over your speakers. It's a beautiful shot really.

The action scenes in the first Terminator aren't all that spectacular on their own merit, but the camera angles and the story that sets them up make them memorable. T2 on the other hand... those scenes are just so badass that you can't help but remember them, despite a slightly weaker story IMO.

Enough ranting, more T1 bar scenes:

The best part about this shot is the Terminator doesn't look let alone even make eye contact with the bouncer. He just removes his hand like one would brush off a crumb.

This shot isn't actually that fantastic. I took it though to illustrate a movie goof that I only just figured out. Notice the underbarrel tube magazine of the shotgun is very short, holding about five rounds. In other shots, however, Reese has a shotgun with an extended tube to hold seven or eight rounds. I'll probably have to watch the opening again to see if the shotgun is a 5 or 8 round gun when he originally steals it to see what scene has the incorrect gun.

Remember that earlier T3 pic I posted with the TX getting "pwned" by the Terminator when he hits her with a truck? Where here is the T1 version.

I guess that's it for now. Oh wait.

Random End of Days screencap. Along with Eraser it's a pretty underrated Arnold movie. Oh and black sunglasses with a leather jacket? This looks like a better "Terminator" wardrobe then in T3. I don't know why but the leather jacket in T3 somewhat rubbed me the wrong way.
