The 4 Mages: short story
Chapter One
The Four Mages
Lady Nicole Star
The rain was pouring down in buckets as the young lady gazed out the window sadly. She focused on the window even more when she heard the sounds of a gay party, where people were talking of idle court matters. All she wanted was to be anywhere but here, enjoying herself not rotting her life away.
A lady right beside her poked her hard in the ribs saying, “Lady Nicole, listen to the king announce his new High Noble. You must root for your father or a day in the dungeons ought to clear you out!” She hit Nicole hard to make her stop staring out the window and focus on the king.
Nicole slowly turned and focused her blue eyes on the ruler of the land. She was becoming hopeless to ever get out of here. “Ladies and gentlemen, I’m proud to say our new High Noble is Sir Nicholas Star, my brother in law! He has been loyal to this country since he married Lady Elizabeth Star, my sister, who has passed recently. To Sir Nicholas!” said the king raising his cup to the new High Noble in a toast. Everyone raised their cups and Nicole was hit to lift her cup by the evil lady.
The young noble got up and hugged her father wearing a fake smile. When he let go she began to edge toward the door to the hallway when a snobby girl stood in her way. “Nicole, how nice to meet you! Since your father is popular with my father doesn’t mean I’m going to be nice to you! Watch your back because one wrong move and you’ll be out in the streets begging for money. Now go and get out of my way!” said the girl spitting at Nicole’s feet walking to her seat next to the king, smiling around the room.
Nicole pushed her shoulder-length brown hair out of her face as she ran to her room. She started packing up a bag she secretly bought in the market place without the picky lady’s, Peggy Van Dar’s, permission. The noble hurried with this task and when she was done she cut her hair very short, so no one would recognize her. That way she can sneak past the guards out of the city, once she got out of her window. She put on an old patched blue dress with her muddiest boots to look like a peasant.
Her bed sheets turned into a rope in seconds and she was climbing down the castle wall away from her evil life to find her true self. The guards grunted as she hurried past to the forest outside town, where her life can begin.
Peggy ruined her life because she wanted a chance to be with Sir Nicholas, but he only made her watch his daughter even more. She wanted to get beyond that and marry him, pushing Nicole out of the picture. Nicole hated her father for doing this to her, so took mild interest in this.
The girl who threatened Nicole was Princess Kiari the Brat. She always hated Nicole and wanted her out of court to try to get Peggy as her mother. Peggy liked the snobby princess, but loved Nicholas too much to notice her young fan. Nicole tried to stay out of these affairs.
The stars twinkled as Nicole lay on the moss covered ground to forget her past life. A stream trickled nearby and she was too weak to get a drink herself, so she dreamed of getting one. A ton of water fell all over her and she choked for air breathlessly. Nicole stared into the night wondering what just happened . . .
Princess Kiari Elizabeth Moon III of England
“Mistress?” a maid says with caution.
“Why did you wake me from my beauty sleep?” yelled Princess Kiari Elizabeth Moon III of England. “Why didn’t you address me by my full name?”
“Sorry, I just wanted to tell you that you have a very busy day today. You have to go to a meeting in an hour and the other maids still have to dress you,” said the maid very frustrated.
“I don’t care!” yelled the princess.
Just then Nicole walked by looking through the open door at a fuzzy haired undergarment-wearing monster. “Why are you looking at me?” screamed the fuzzy haired monster. Then Nicole realized it’s not a fuzzy haired monster it was Kiari the Brat.
“Sorry,” said Nicole politely. “Don’t you think you could get dressed in regular clothes though?”
“Oooooooh! I’m going to get you!” yelled Kiari the Brat jumping out of bed. She landed hard on the floor as the king peered in.
“Kiari?” said the king puzzled.
“Uuuuh . . . I . . .I . . .wassss . . . was . . . looking for a maid. Maid! MAID!” said Kiari trying to cover up her embarrassing fall as Nicole hurried away.
The next day Kiari woke up and got dressed without being asked to. “Today is going to be a good day,” said Kiari gay fully. It was a good day until that night.
“Come here!” said a shadowy voice. Kiari cautiously walked toward the shadow. “Here drink this!” the shadow said holding out a glass filled to the brim. Kiari slowly and cautiously took the glass. She put it to her lips and with one swig she fell to the ground.
A little while later Kiari woke in a room filled with darkness. Kiari looked it over and said scared, “Wh. . . Where am I?” . . .
Heather McNorman
A shout, “Get up you useless twits!” awoke the two girls sleeping contently on the straw in the stable. They rose quickly, confused but aware of the woman in the doorway. The stout lady blocked the entrance outside and grunted to the white dresses hanging on hooks nearby. She left them with a slam of the door as the girls changed quickly. They both hurried outside to do their daily chores.
“Heather, it’s your turn to tend the sheep and I will go do the groceries in the market. I need time to spend with Josh; I suspect we will be hitched soon! Good luck, bye!” said one girl named Catherine dreamily.
The green mountain was over flowing with sheep when the other girl named Heather walked up toward it. She took a spot on a rock and watched the sheep for hours. After a period of time, Heather fell asleep dreaming of a new home.
A while later, she was shaken awake by a great force that threw Heather several feet. “You ungrateful twit, a load of our sheep have been eaten by wolves, thanks to you. I will let your father decide the punishment, lets go!” said her mother dragging Heather to her doom.
They walked up to the tiny cabin in the village as Heather’s father, Morrid McNorman, told Catherine, “The two nobles, Princess Kiari and Lady Nicole, are at it like mad dogs. They never get along and they could start a cat fight I suspect.” He stopped the moment Heather entered tearful prepared for her fate.
“Heather has lost us a good load of sheep that would have been good for future trading. I have given you the right to decide her fate, Morrid,” said Morrid’s wife, Camile, waiting for him to give a horrible verdict to Heather.
“I think we shouldn’t be raising a forgetful daughter, who will lose what keeps us living. I decide we send her away because she is of no use to us. She is only a girl!” said Morrid eyeing his daughter happily; finally he was able to get rid of her. This made Heather so mad because she has done so much for her family and didn’t deserve to be kicked out.
Catherine raised her fist toward Morrid but stopped when he gave her an evil glare too. “You pig!” Catherine yelled violently at her so-called father. Catherine didn’t care what happened because her sister’s fate hung on the line.
“You have no right to send me away! I work hard and keep our family from going to ruins. I do a lot more than work for you, I’m basically your servant!” said Heather because she could no longer control her rage. She saw Catherine thrown in her room by her mother, crying to try to save her only sister from the wrath of their parents.
“Impudent girl!” Morrid snarled at Heather dangerously. “You will leave this family and rid us of your bad luck, after dinner. We no longer care for a selfish daughter like you! Maybe you need to go out there to grow up!”
His words stung so bad she thought he deserved his dinner to be put on fire for throwing her out. His meal smoked and went into flames. Heather jumped up and ran for the forest outside town. She heard her father scream as she reached the forest.
Her father hated her and always favored Catherine. He would pick on her for nothing but sport. Morrid would do this for hours at a time!
Camile was Morrid’s slave doing his every whim and wish. If only she got a mind of her own!
Heather came to a stream and took a long drink. She gazed up at the girl on the opposite bank just lying there. Gold glittered from the girl’s necklace as she rustled Heather noticed the girl was soaked to the core. Heather looked her over realizing that the girl was of noble blood!
Alice Windthrob
After a long days work at the palace Alice headed home. Not to spend the evening with her family but by herself in a little shack with bugs in the roof and old hay floors with rusty walls to top it all off. But that night she would get away from all of that mistreatment. She was going to run away!
“Oh my feet!” says Alice’s gentle voice as she sits on a tree stomp. As she looks down to take her shoes off and rest she sees footprints. She followed the footprints engraved in the muddy soil, she looks up and sees a girl being dragged to an old shack. It was Kiari being taken away, but because she was to scared she didn’t want to help her. Alice ran away from there until she saw two people by a stream.
