First off, apologies for the tone of my last post. I do not wishoh I didnt think you were condescending toward Scandinavians, people must be allowed to have whatever view they like about the Vikings cause it was them you had an opinion about and not the Scandinavians of today. As a Scandinavian I have to tolerate that people might not look at the Viking with respect and admiration. I thought it is an interesting debate we have here that can be educational for both you and me and all the others that care to read it,........ and oh yeah totally agree on Ace Of Base but thats a Swedish embarrassment so ............😄 😮💨
to come across as condescending towards Scandanavia. In
fact, though it may be hard to believe, but I actually have a
great deal of respects towards those nations, and their great
success in creating stable, prosperous and free societies, as
well as all of their contributions (excluding Ace of Base ofcourse
But I believe you may have thought I mis-typed or misspelt the word😮 😮 oooopss 😮
"religion" for "region". I didn't. I wrote "region", and I meant "region".
They wanted to conquer lands, not for religion, but for the same
reasons that people through-out history have conquered each other,
for wealth or to increase their own power (the leaders that is).
Charlemagne himself, the north had little to offer, and thus may notactually he was curious about natural resources the lands might offer and timber was valuable goods those days, no to mention stones for fortresses and so on
And the naval defeats you refer to I guess is the Viking raids on Seville in mid 800 were the Vikings failed to succeed, not all Viking raids were successful , too many times they were to few to even stand a chance yet it didnt stop them trying though. And I think it is this mentality to attack larger opponents that gave Viking reputation as fearless warriors, the actual truth was that they tried to trick the defenders to follow their retreat in order to ambush them. this tactic sometimes worked well for the Vikings and it sometimes cost them dearly.
But I wouldnt call it naval battles cause the Vikings avoided them as best as they could, their long ship was fast ships, good at navigating in shallow water but no battle fortresses at sea
