They had fought before. And Batman highly disapproves Spawn's methods of crime fightin. Spawn had great powers, but Batman prove to be far more skillful in his methods of investigating. Despite Spawn attempts to defeat Batman he did recognize he was a worthy opponent. He even heal him with his powers outta respect for Batman's feats.
