He crept up behind her ever so silently and waited till he was almost positive she couldn’t see him before leaping on her back.
Clarissa sighed and rolled her shoulders, “Are you through yet?”
“You know, it’s no longer as fun as when you still jumped up and screamed.”
“I was expecting you… plus I saw your feet!” She grinned, exposing dimples in her rosy cheeks from the cold.
“Why are you out this late?” Irritation crept into his voice and only someone who’s known him all his life like she has could have caught it.
“I needed to speak to you; I’ve gotten some news from papa.” Her eyes were expressionless and glazed over, her face concealing all emotion.
“Come now, what is it? Did he buy you a new pony?” Christian chided and moved to put the saddle away properly.
“I’m to be married…in a fortnight.” The air was still with tension and the only sound came from the heavy leather saddle hitting the floor.
Christian rolled his shoulders and took in a deep breath. He counted to five before finally turning around to look at her. She stood in a circle of candlelight from the candelabra on the walls. Her cloak lay at her feet and her hair cascaded over one shoulder in loose curls. She never normally wore it down; it was always in a severe style so it would stay out of her way whilst she was forced to work. He looked at her face. Where just minutes ago it was care-free, young, grinning, now she looked tired and worn. The light that danced in her eyes was now dull, her skin looked more porcelain then ever before as if she was sick.
“Are you eating properly?” He turned back away from her to replace the saddle where it lay.
“Christian!” Her voice rose a few octaves.

Bertel Thorvaldsen (November 19, 1770 - March 24, 1844), a Danish sculptor of European renown, was born in Copenhagen in 1770 (according to some accounts in 1768). He attended the Royal Danish Academy of Art (Det Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi) in that city, winning all the prizes including the large Gold Medal. As a consequence, he was granted a royal stipend, enabling him to complete his studies in Rome. As it happened, he spent most of his active life there (1797-1838).
