What's there to elaborate. You're not stupid.

A stereotype comes form somewhere. There ARE fat Americans out there, and there are smelly French people, just as there are Muslims who are terrorists, and just as there are Jews who are stingy for money, there are white people who are red neck racists...etc

Those stereotypes...in fact all stereotypes come from some form of truth.

They certainly didn't appear out of thin air.

That's true...

Just for the sake of discussion and keeps this from dying on the first page because of all the one line posts.

But are all Mexicans illegal immigrants who can do nothing but cut lawn and build houses? Are all black people fast runners and yet always late? Does every woman LOVE to shop?

Of course stereotypes come from some level of truth, but are they fair? What's their purpose? Do they add to the flavor of our world or lessen the dignity of us all?

They basically serve as a defense mechanism, I reckon. Through wanting to believe that we are ourselves individuals, we will label others as having a certain trait. It stems from the insecurity that as a single person, we are no more 'special' than anyone else.

stereotypes are ignorant ways of determing how a certain group of people act or perform. me being black, i deal with ALOT, i was walking out of publix one day, and their was a guy and his wife walking past me into the store, i glanced at their car for a second, and as soon as i did that he locked it with his laser automated keys. Could be coincidence? or maybe he felt threanted i might steal his car?

Either way, IMO blacks deal with stereotypes more than any other race. Could maybe be that I have bad luck, and i run into a lot of assoles, but hell...... we get generalized for stealing, being "ghetto," only liking Rap, using slang, cant get a job, cant hold onto a job, always complaining, pulling the race card, cant trust them, uneducated, and if were not any of that, were not eduacated, hell no, were "acting" white, my god the ignorance....and the list goes on.

My only answer to stereotypes, is this: the actions of a few people dont represent an entire people.

It's pretty funny that your location is Hustlin'.

all Texans wear cowboy hats. all Brits are pompous a$$holes.

I guess a 'stereotype', is something which is attributed to the whole group of people, based on what maybe small minority (it doesn't even have to be a small minority) have done/are doing.

Sometimes, we make sense of things through Stereotyping.

Like for example, when we think of Middle East, or Russia, or Maybe China, we have pre-set judgments of what it might be like, based on what we know.
This assumption are, more often than not, false, though...IMHO.

Europe being cold and miserable. All people in Japan knowing karate.

We love them, we hate them. Some of us fall into them while others create them. Some strive to break free from them while others strive to achieve them.

So whats with stereotypes. Why does humanity constantly look for ways to point out differences between themselves? Coming from different countries wasn't enough so we started discriminating between those from different religions. That wasn't enough so we had to hate those of different colors and races. That wasn't enough so we had to create differences defined by social status, sense of style, unique slang and music. Its as if no one has their own individuality. Everyone falls into some category that has been set for them. The Rocker, The Jock, The Theater Geek, The Druggies, even those who try to steer from any stereotype have been given the title of Unique Rebel.

Ok, so in the spirit of trying to relieve the world of reasons to hate each other I'd like to start a discussion on the mentality behind creating these categories. Share a stereotype, the good, the bad, the true and the false. Share your own experiences with being lumped into a group. Every group has its natural enemy, and in my experience there's even a sort of food chain with a group at the top and a group at the bottom, which seems to be different everywhere you go.

Then, why do you think it happens. What is embedded deep within us that drives us to look at the differences between us. Or is it that at all? Is it actually a drive to search for those similar to us and thus separate ourselves into these groups?

What do you think?

We're Humans, we get bored if we don't label, discriminate or critique.

serial killers are bad people. Paris Hilton is misunderstood.

True enough. Humans are, in general, nasty assholes. Hence why Science won't save the world.

all rapists are blacks. If a white person lives in a trailer park, they are white trash.

Americans are fat, stupid, lazy people.

Europe being cold and miserable? Never heard of that stereotype. It is an England stereotype (which is sometimes true) not Europe's.

They think that about Europe, as a whole? Jesus. Have they ever heard of the Mediterranean?

I know, I am not one of them.
