i say modern.... due to the fact that most are completely new have new moves techniques, and all around better....

And you can't forget that many characters you think are new aren't... Ryu from Ninja Gaiden, Samus, etc. Old all the way guys, Megaman, Bomberman, LINK!!!!!, freaking Mario, and the aforementioned Ninja and Bounty Hunter combo. There's just way too many to list here...
