Chapter 5: Trying
As the back door slammed shut, Harry heard his uncle from the family room:
“Watch it boy!”
Harry ignored the comment and raced up the stairs, skipping two at a time before he crashed though the door of his room. He flung open his chest and began to fling his stuff across the room keeping a few select items in a pile on his bed. Finally, having reached the base of the chest, Harry picked up one final item, which had cracked under the weight of his books. Sitting down heavily upon his bed, Harry stared at the puzzle that now lay before him. Strewn across his bedcover was the remainder of Sirius’s mirror.
For the next few hours, Harry struggled to reassemble the mirror using both magic and mind. It was only as the sun began to set that Harry realized the hopelessness of the situation. There was no possible way to piece together something so destroyed as the article lying before him. Half the mirror was a pile of silvery powder leaving the remaining portion unfinished and useless.
Caught up in his despair, Harry began to weep. There was no moon that night and as Harry gazed at the black sky, he thought of its emptiness. Like the sky, that same emptiness filled him with lonely and depressing thoughts. It was in this position of looking at the starless sky through tear-filled eyes that Harry fell asleep.
