Skean Dhus are purely ornamental - little more than letter openers. The real knife used by highlanders originally was called a "Dirk" the blade of which ran from just below the knee to the ankle.
The idea of the kilt as the "national dress" did not occur until the early-mid 19th century. After the Jacobite rising in 1745 the Hanovarian monarch of the UK decided to ban a symbols of highland culture (such as tartan, bagpipes, and the Gaelic language) in a bid to fully incorporate the highlands into Britain. By the 1820s the threat of rebellion was deemed over and a "renaissance" of sorts took place.
The catalyst for this renaissance was the discovery of the Scottish crown jewels, thought to have been destroyed around the time of unification (1707). This discovery prompted a parade in Edinburgh and the king made his only visit to Scotland for this parade. The famous authour Sir Walter Scott persuaded the king that wearing a kilt would endear him to the Scottish people, which it did.
Anyhoo, though the seeds were sown, the trend did not take off until a conman claiming to be the illegitimate son of Bonny Prince Charlie turned up in Edinburgh and started telling people that tartans were specific to the family name, thus injecting identity into the kilt - and so selling a shitload.
In reality the only tartan specific to anything were thee tartans of the army regiments (excluded from the ban because the pipes and tartans were symbols of Scotland and the Scots were feared soldiers and the army realised the value of fear in battle.
What I'm trying to say is kilts are a sham really, but chicks dig 'em so Scotsmen throughout the generations have nurtured the kilt in an ingenius scheme to get their hole.
omg... please dont give us damn history lessons!

As a Scot:
being a nationalist does not mean kicking immigrants and foreigners out. Any idiot knows if you go far enough back anyone, anywhere is an immigrant.
As a Scot, nationalism means that you want Scotland to be independent, i.e. you want Scotland governed from Scotland, in the best interests of Scotland rather than governed from London in the best interests of Britain (85% of which is England - go figure what the best interests of Britain involve).

Ice Within
I told you what a nationalist is in Scotland.
I know other countries see nationalism as something entirely nastier. When I told my old German roommate that I was a nationalist he thought I was a neo-Nazi.
When I explained what nationalism was in Scotland he understood and stopped looking at me like was a mass-murdering psycho.
