That was the whole problem in the first place, the black gang members were racist to the white girls. That's the point of this topic, stupid, black people being racist to white people.
"According to witnesses and parents of the victims, four young girls from St. Edmund’s had the day off from school due to Easter recess. They were playing basketball during dismissal from nearby Marine Park Junior High School, when several Marine Park students demanded to use the court."
Four girls from one junior high school had the day off because of Easter break, and were playing basketball on the court near another junior high school during recess.
"After adults intervened and asked them to wait their turn, the teens left - but returned in a pack of up to 30, both boys and girls, and stormed into the park."
"Gang" as in "a large group," not "an informal orginzation of delinquents".
"Witnesses say the attackers were all black and called their victims 'white crackers' during the bloody melee, which raged for almost 20 minutes."
The attackers called the victims 'white crackers' during the melee, not before or after. This supports the notion that the girls were beaten up for refusing to leave the basketball court. The fact that the girls were called racial epithets during the beating is incidental.
For this to be considered a hate crime, the race of the victims must be the motivation for the crime not a component of the crime.
