what happens to the male praying mantis before it has sex ?
apart from the boner.... (trust someone to say it dirty bastards) the male has to sneak up on the female hiding all the way jump on do his thing for a few hours then fly away. If the female see's him however its a different story she will eat his head. now you may think thats the end of it but the male Mantis will continue to make love to the female with no head. this actually helps the female get pregnant because she produces more eggs when eating/full up.
Ow, I thought you meant a physical change on the males account. I know about the female trying to eat the male during intercourse, starting with the head (cause insects don't have real brains, but a cortex running down the whole length of them, allowing most body functions to remain possible even if the head is removed).
Spiders have the same 'extra dimention' to their sex life, the females try to kill the males after the deed to feed of them, in order to gain energy and reserves for the egg laying bizz.

Hmm, what I think is that these female characters were introduced to invoke more varied emotions from the dark knight he interacts with these ladies in the stories, giving more depth to the character of batman, making more story lines and options possible. But that's just the storyteller in me talking.
And since the reason is funny, I'm guessing more in the direction of:
- one of the writers sisters was wining about the absence of a strong female character, and the comics having a far to high testosterone level (you know how girls can get) so they finally gave in and added some chicks with attitude and of course, a tender side
- one of the artists has a lifetime membership on some naughty magazine, and just couldn't resist molding both his interests in one drawing (of say catwoman), and the chiefs went wild and wanted the creation in the comic
- the crew got drunk one evening and started fantasising about the possibility that Bruce Wayne might be a cross-dresser on saturdays. Next up in mind was batman cross-dressing. One of em was sketching as the silly conversation went on, they found the drawing next day, went wild and voila; batgirl

there may have been an element of what u said in the first paragraph involved but the main reason was that before Batgirl/Batwoman was introduced there was a strong suspicion that Batman and Robin were gay. people saw that rich man in the mansion all alone then he gets the young guy to move in and a rumor started this went on for years. until the writers one day decided they had enough of all the Batman and Robin are gay talk so they brought in the girls to prove that they were in fact straight because the writers had never set out for Batman and Robin to be gay.
the writers sister thing u mentioned isn't bad mind because Batwoman was based not on a writers sister but his wife.
