Well, It was Emperor, but during the filming of the PT, he went through a phase and changed it to Senator, and then to Chancellor.

but in seriousness there are 2 names that are common among SW fans.

1) is Cos Palpatine, this comes from the original version of palpatines character in Lucas's early scripts, he was named "Cos Dashit" and many Star Wars fan fiction writers have quite incorrectly adopted the name "Cos Palpatine" in their stories and web pages, so much so that it has become fanon.

2) is Dauntis Palpatine (which i like better) is from Supershadow. and this because of SS's 'popularity' has become accepted as well.

but none of this is official in any sense.

Well, you know something? If the character Palpatine, the Supreme Chancellor of the entire galaxy, doesn't need any explaining from Lucas then how come he supplied names for characters that get very little screentime like Elian Sleezbagano?

What about Yoda then? No one got worried about Yoda´s full name through the times of the OT and the PT...
I can live with just Palpatine. Or Darth Sidious. Or The Emperor. During the OT we didn´t even know ANY name. And no one asked. And the origin of the name Palpatine is from author Timothy Zahn, first mentioned in his book "Heirs to the Force". I think that was´95 or something...
