From what I read, it portrays African-Americans as drug-dealers, pimps, whores, and generally bad people overall. Unfortunately this is the most popular media image of blacks. And to further this many young blacks are imitating this behavior by committing actual crimes and dressing like prostitutes. Go to downtown Bronx and you'll see what I mean.
Originally posted by moviejunkie23I don't know if you read my whole post, but right under that paragraph you quoted I addressed the background music:
what about the background music , can you refer me to some rap musicians that don't use super mario style music in the background because virtually every rap song i have heard is weak when it comes to the background music.
The "background music" is called production and it can be very good in some cases, for proof check out guys like De La Soul. Prince Paul is a genius. Now it can't compare to rock's background music of course, because a DJ just simply isn't going to match the talent and detail that goes into a band full of musicians with specific instruments, but good hip hop producers do what they are meant to do perfectly, and that's provide a good beat for the rapper to rap over. It can't be too elaborate or complex or it will draw attention away from the lyrics.
So right off the bat I'm telling you that great hip hop production is no match for good rock instrumentals. But they aren't supposed to be either, they are supposed to add to the song and compliment the rapper's vocals.
If you really want to be open minded and try some hip hop production, I'll humor you. Since you seem to dislike normal hip hop production, try some not so normal stuff like Public Enemy, De La Soul, Deltron 3030, RJD2, Madvillain, and Cunninlynguists.
Here's a specific list for you so you don't have to pick and choose:
Public Enemy - Fear of a Black Planet
De La Soul - Say no go
Deltron 3030 - Positive Contact (artist might appear as Del tha Funkee Homosapian)
RJD2 - The Final Frontier
Madvillain - Meat Grinder (don't worry if the lyrics sound like jibberish)
Cunninlynguists - Mic like a Memory
Obviously if you don't like rap because it's not singing and you dislike looped beats then hip hop isn't the genre for you. But that doesn't matter, I'm not trying to convince you or anyone else to like hip hop, you listen to whatever you want. All I'm trying to get people do is respect it, not like it. I'd be doing the same thing if the thread was about metal or rock.
