apparently there could be 2 explanations...(so far)
1) they were on a plane or boat that crashed on the island....

Anna and the others lived in another hatch... theres 2 already... when sawyer was attacked by a shark, we saw its tail with a different symbol to the other hatches... that makes 2 confirmed and 1 possible...
Its very possible that another hatch was researching the area of zoology aka animals...
and that thing in the jungle could be the sum of there work...
